President and C.E.O. of Holy Cross Children’s Center, Brother Francis Boylan came to the National Shrine of the Little Flower church last Tuesday and spoke to a gathering of Knights and parish guests. Without a doubt he inspired the hearts of everyone there. Brother Francis has devoted himself to ministering to poor and troubled people of the Detroit area and his words offer a glimpse into a world of desperation and despair which is right here in our very midst.
He reminded us of something that too many of us would prefer to forget : that we are called by God to seek out and care for the least of our brethren. Our lives are very busy but we must make time to carry Christ’s cross, not only for the benefit of those we serve, but for ourselves as well. Only through loving compassion towards the lonely and forgotten can we appreciate the many blessings we have in our own lives.
Brother Francis asked, “If Jesus were here today in the Detroit area, where do you think He would be and what would He be doing?” These are very deep questions and to honestly answer them is to know exactly what God expects of each of us. “It is not difficult or complicated, simply go and LOVE the people”.
Brother Francis thanked the Knights of Columbus for their ongoing support of Holy Cross. He also made it clear that handing over a check is one thing, but actually rolling up your sleeves and carrying the weight of Christ’s cross is quite another. Are we up to it?
